Grignan History

The exact origins of Grignan have been lost in history.

Since the Romaine period, the area has experienced many changes. For example the invasion by the hordes from the North, and then the arrival of the Saracens, who gave names to places. It seems credible that the Romans could have created Grignan. A period of 800 years lapsed between the departure of the Romans and the first authentic document about the area. It is unknown what occurred during this time. Father Jean de la Croix, from the Aiguebelle Abbey (12 km from Grignan) gives 2 possible etymologies for the name Grignan: the name of the sun in Celtic language, or the name of a Romain proprietor, “Granius”.
